Established in 2009, Diáspora’s music celebrates the unity and diversity of rhythms that emerged out of the African Diaspora and their dissemination throughout Latin America. All songs will be recorded to a click track, and superimposed over a guide track. All guide tracks are available immediately, and provisional scores subject to key/structure changes. Diáspora is looking for freelance Latin piano players based in London and the south east of England.

Diáspora is our established 5 - 12 piece Latin salsa production. The sheet music is fully charted out in arrangements. You will be synchronising closely with the bassist. This role demands strong chart reading and interpretation skills, and a thorough experience of salsa and Latin music playing styles and structures. The production covers a wide range of repertoire; traditional and contemporary salsa, Latin jazz and popular music, Brazilian music and original compositions. Diáspora requires strong Latin pianists to call on for engagements in London and further afield.

This role places a strong emphasis in 2 experience areas: 1) salsa and Latin music playing styles, 2) jazz and chart reading.

Essential:

1. Thorough experience of salsa and Latin music playing styles and structures. This includes:
   1. Differentiate and play in either 2:3 or 3:2 clave.
   2. Replicate Guajeo (montuno) piano arpeggiated figurations from a chord sequence.
   3. Effectively alter the figurations between son and montuno sections.
   4. Effectively alter the inversions between montuno and mambo sections.

Diáspora is currently recording an album and a demo, and is looking for a first call pianist interested in working with the production as it develops.

Description & Requirements

Latin / salsa band DIÁSPORA seeks a sound engineer for a confirmed contracted 10piece band engagement on Saturday 27.04.13., London (please enquire for exact postcode). The gig would require a wet hire (hire + mixing and balancing) as the band will be playing with the full horn section.

Fee:
£100 (£25 hire + £75 mixing) + reasonable expenses (transport, subsistence) anywhere within 25 miles of London / SW1A.

Timings:

• 18:00 - arrive / setup / soundcheck
• 20:00 - 2 x 65 minute sets with an interval
• 00:30 - finish

Setup:

• 2 x vocals (male and female)
• Electric piano
• Electric bass
• 2 x percussion (kit / timbale setup and congas)
• 4 x horns (alto sax doubling flute + backing vox, tenor sax, trombone, trumpet)

Bonus:
Love of Latin music and / or experience in working within the jazz / funk / salsa / soul circuits desirable but not essential.

RED & BLACK MUSIC is looking for a resident drummer and semi-resident bassist to perform as part of the house band for the new Thursday night jam / open mic session ‘Tea & Jam’ in Vauxhall, London.

BACKGROUND

​Tea & Jam will be a regular Thursday live music night in Vauxhall. The format will be a hybrid between a ‘jam session’ (where musicians collaborate with the house band) and an ‘open mic’ session (where bands / solo artists come and give small slots).

The idea will be a laboratory / platform for creatives to showcase new material in front of a live audience (although it is welcome to those who wish to turn up and jam). 

The style will be open-ended (i.e., not strictly limited to jazz but open to all types of music, and indeed spoken-word / interdisciplinary performing arts) dependent on guest musicians. As it develops, we envisage certain dates being hosted by alternative artists to attract different audiences.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

​The night is a co-promotion between the band and the venue, therefore, there is no guarantee and the band would receive a 50% split of the door takings. Most nights would be hosted by a 3-piece band (sax, piano, percussion), with 4-piece band on a semi-regular basis, depending on attendance.

As such, we are placing a strong emphasis on someone who, as well as contributing to the night through performing, is willing to push attendance through dissemination via social media. Marketing will be carried out on a seasonal, monthly and fortnightly basis via conservatory / university student and graduate mailing lists and online listings websites, however, we require everyone / all hands on deck to push sales via Facebook / Twitter.

Therefore, we are ideally looking for the following requisites (in order of importance):

• Looking for a regular performance position
• Willing to help draw in audiences via Facebook / Twitter
• Trained in jazz, yet versatile across a wide range of styles (jazz, popular, world, theatre, experimental etc.)
• Good sight-reading abilities (dots and changes)

In return, we can offer:

• a regular performance position to further develop your performance skills
• increase your chances of getting paid performance opportunities
• a chance to road test new material that you are composing / arranging
• a chance to discover new music

Please note: There is no initial money guarantee in this position. Money is obviously dependent on how well candidates can help to promote the night and draw in new audiences. However, we are not necessarily looking for musicians who do not already undertake paid engagements, as many of the musicians with whom we will be working are existing freelance musicians. Instead, they will approach this as an opportunity for a regular opportunity to develop artistic skills as a performer without monetary pressure.
