[07/06/2025, 11:51:58] RD: Hi NW it wasn’t about the dates as such, it’s more about how the communication around confirmations was handled. When dates are agreed I need to be able to trust that they’ll hold especially when it involves hiring musicians. Going forward to keep things clear I’d need any future bookings to be confirmed with payment upfront. Totally understand if that’s not possible. Title
Payment Irregularities and Lack of Transparency – Nova Boss @ TSH / JS (NW, SVA) Description Between 07/06/2025 and 09/06/2025, following booking discussions for Nova Boss performances at TSH, Stroud, Gloucestershire, it became apparent that payment arrangements for artists booked through JS / NW (SVA) were unclear and potentially irregular. In the course of conversation, NW stated that payments for hotel gigs could only be made directly by TSH, not by SVA or JS. This raised questions as to why bookings were being arranged through NW if he was not in a contractual position to administer payments. This lack of financial transparency caused significant confusion and anxiety for RD (Nova Boss), as it appeared that NW was operating as an informal intermediary without formal authority or accountability. Despite repeated attempts to clarify, no documentation, written agreement, or direct contact from the hotel was provided to confirm the financial structure of the engagement. The revelation that JS did not hold artist funds in a dedicated or separate holding account, combined with the insistence that artists be booked “through NW,” created a perceived conflict of interest and undermined professional trust. The uncertainty over who was legally responsible for payment – and whether any payment guarantee existed at all – led to the withdrawal of Nova Boss from the scheduled June 2025 performances at TSH. Action Taken RD directly queried payment procedures with NW (SVA). Upon learning that payments were issued directly from TSH, RD withdrew from the booking on ethical and professional grounds. No financial transaction occurred; no deposit or contract was issued. The incident was documented for reference. Future policy established: Nova Boss will only contract directly with the paying entity or promoter holding a confirmed payment channel. Resolutions Withdrawal communicated respectfully, without escalation or hostility. Clarity obtained that NW / JS do not handle artist payments directly. Nova Boss’s position formalised: all future bookings to be confirmed in writing, directly with the paying party (venue or promoter). No outstanding debt or contractual dispute. Notes Comments This issue connects to a wider pattern of gatekeeping, whereby artists were required to communicate through NW even though he had no financial control or responsibility. The arrangement placed artists in a precarious position, effectively liable to perform without clear payment assurance. It also created potential reputational risk for TSH, as artists could perceive the venue to be disorganised or untrustworthy, despite the confusion originating externally. The situation compounded emotional stress and undermined confidence in local music administration. This incident highlights the necessity for clear financial governance in arts and event programming. Any third-party acting as a booking coordinator should be formally authorised to handle or guarantee payments, or else artists must contract directly with the funding source. In this case, the lack of clarity around financial responsibility and payment channels reflected poor administrative practice and avoidable opacity. Nova Boss’s withdrawal was therefore both ethically and professionally justified. Moving forward, Nova Boss will continue to champion fair pay transparency and direct contracting as standard practice.
