Title Saxophone Damage Due to Microphone Attachment Incident – Pre-Show Equipment Failure Description On the evening of Saturday 28th June 2025, approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled performance time, I experienced a critical equipment failure due to an incident involving my saxophone and attached microphone system. The microphone was securely mounted on my saxophone bell and connected to a wireless receiver unit, which was placed in my trouser pocket. While setting up at the DJ booth, I temporarily placed my saxophone down without realising the microphone cable was still tethered to the receiver. As I walked away from the booth, the tether tightened and pulled the saxophone off the surface, causing it to fall forcefully to the ground. The instrument landed directly on the key stack and sustained significant structural and mechanical damage. The saxophone is a Yamaha Professional Series Alto Saxophone, purchased new in 2023 for approximately £2,000. The impact rendered the instrument unplayable. Action Taken Upon assessing the damage and confirming the saxophone was inoperable, I immediately contacted fellow musician Oli , who was able to travel from Harrow and provide a backup soprano saxophone. This allowed me to fulfil the performance, albeit with a one-hour delay to the scheduled start time. I notified the agent and venue of the delay and coordinated soundcheck adjustments with the on-site technician to accommodate the substitute instrument. Resolutions The gig was completed successfully using the loaned soprano saxophone. The damaged Yamaha instrument has since been sent to a specialist repair technician based in Germany for full assessment and potential restoration. The instrument is currently considered near-total loss pending the outcome of the inspection and quotation from the technician. I am in the process of contacting Insure4Music to initiate a claim. Notes Comments Wireless microphone receiver units should never be physically connected to the player’s clothing or person without a quick-release or slack system in place. Future setups should include either: A stand-mounted microphone to eliminate any physical tethering risk, or A harness or strap-mounted receiver with a secured cable loop to prevent the instrument from being dragged. It is recommended that all band members conduct a pre-show gear safety check to ensure wireless connections are safely routed and instruments are secure when not in use. Insurance documentation should be reviewed annually to ensure all high-value items are listed and current proof of ownership is retained. Hi. My microphone was on the sax. The receiver was in my pocket. I put the sax down on the Dj booth and walked away not realising they were still attached. The sax went down, right on the keypad. It’s a new sax. This happened 30 min before showtime. £2K practically a write off. Won’t play. Comments are closed.
